چکیده

IN a model of ventilated piglets with healthy lungs, we recently demonstrated a substantial deposition of nebulized amikacin into the distal lung. However, only half of the amount of amikacin available for the lungs was eliminated in the urine; the other half was either fixed in the lungs, eliminated by mucociliary clearance, or distributed in other organs. Consequently, consecutive daily nebulizations of amikacin may result in lung tissue accumulation and systemic accumulation, and the frequency of readministration should be defined in experimental animals before nebulized amikacin can be safely used in humans for treating or preventing ventilatorassociated pneumonia. The aim of the present study was to assess lung tissue and plasma pharmacokinetics resulting from the daily nebulization of amikacin during a 4-day period of mechanical ventilation in anesthetized piglets with healthy lungs.

Quantitative evaluation of hemodynamic parameters during acute alveolar hypoxia and hypercapnia in the isolated ventilated-perfused rabbit lung

Introduction: Acute respiratory disorders such as obstructive pulmonary diseases and hypoventilation may lead to alveolar hypoxia and hypercapnia which their effects on pulmonary vascular beds are controversial. The aim of this study was to establish the isolated perfused lung setup and investigate the effects of alveolar hypoxia and hypercapnia on pulmonary vascular resistance. Methods: White ...

Total body response to mechanical ventilation of healthy lungs: an experimental study in piglets.

The objective of our study was to assess the influence of mechanical ventilation on healthy body organs. Fifteen piglets (aged 6 weeks, 19-27 kg) were anesthetized, instrumented, and divided into three groups: Group A - spontaneously breathing, group B - mechanically ventilated with tidal volume 6 ml/kg, and group C - ventilated with tidal volume 10 ml/kg for 12 hours. The parameters of lung, h...

Healthy lung tissue response to mechanical ventilation in an experimental porcine model.

BACKGROUND The aim of this comparative study was to assess the impact of two different settings of tidal volume (Vt) on the function and morphology of the mechanically ventilated lungs during a 12-h period. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 32 animals were randomly divided into two groups. Group A included piglets ventilated with a Vt of 6 ml/kg and group B piglets ventilated with a Vt of 10 m...

Intravenous versus nebulized ceftazidime in ventilated piglets with and without experimental bronchopneumonia: comparative effects of helium and nitrogen.

BACKGROUND Lung deposition of intravenous cephalosporins is low. The lung deposition of equivalent doses of ceftazidime administered either intravenously or by ultrasonic nebulization using either nitrogen-oxygen or helium-oxygen as the carrying gas of the aerosol was compared in ventilated piglets with and without experimental bronchopneumonia. METHODS Five piglets with noninfected lungs and...

The Role of EDD (Exercise Capacity, Dyspnea, and Diffusing Capacity of Lungs for Carbon Monoxide) Index in Pulmonary Fibrosis Secondary to Scleroderma

Introduction: Pulmonary involvement secondary to Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in SSc patients. We designed this study to determine the correlation of important lung function parameters with lung High Resolution CT (HRCT) scan findings. Materials and Methods: Thirty–two consecutive diffuse SSc patients with pulmonary fibrosis were enrolled in this cross...
